Mean, geometric mean or harmonic mean
Enter a list of numbers and switch between the plain mean, geometric mean (for compounding values like growth rates) and harmonic mean (for rates like speed) — sum, min, max and range are shown alongside whichever average you pick.
How to use
- Enter your numbers separated by commas, spaces or line breaks
- Press Calculate
- Switch between mean, geometric mean and harmonic mean to compare
Common questions
What's the difference between the mean, geometric mean and harmonic mean?
The plain mean adds values and divides by the count. The geometric mean multiplies them and takes the nth root, and is the right average for values that compound, like year-on-year growth rates. The harmonic mean divides the count by the sum of the reciprocals, and is the right average for rates like speed.
Why does switching to geometric or harmonic mean sometimes show an error?
Both are only defined for numbers above 0 — a zero or negative value has no meaningful reciprocal or root in this context. Switch back to the plain mean if your list includes zero or negative numbers.
How many numbers can I enter?
Up to 1,000 per calculation, separated by commas, spaces, semicolons or line breaks.
