Frequently asked questions
Short, honest answers about how Khohari works, what it does with your files, and what to do when something doesn’t go as planned.
Your files and privacy
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. In the PDF and image tools your browser does the work on your own device, and the file never goes to our servers. A few tools make a network request for something other than your document. The currency converter fetches exchange rates and the OCR tool downloads its text-recognition engine once, for example. Your file is not part of those requests. The privacy policy lists each one.
How can I check that for myself?
Open your browser’s developer tools (F12 on most browsers), go to the Network tab and run a tool. You will see the page’s own files load, and no request that carries your document. If anonymous usage statistics are switched on, you may also see a tiny request containing a tool name and nothing else.
Do I need an account?
No. Nothing on the site needs a sign-up or a login, and there is no paid tier.
What do you keep about me?
Very little ourselves. Your browser stores a few preferences, such as light or dark theme, favourite tools and the settings you used last. When usage statistics are on, they are anonymous: which tool was opened, a rough country, the type of device and how long the page stayed open. No name, no email and no IP address. The ad networks that show ads on the site collect their own data, which the privacy policy explains. The full list is on the privacy policy and cookies & storage pages.
Is it safe for sensitive documents like contracts or ID?
Because the file stays on your device, it is about as safe as opening it on your own computer. There are two honest caveats. A browser extension that can read the pages you visit could in principle see what is on screen, and on a shared computer the result sits in the Downloads folder until you delete it. For anything truly private, use your own device and a private window.
Do you store my PDF passwords or my signature?
Passwords you type to open a PDF are used on your device to read the file and are not stored. If you choose to save a signature in Sign PDF or Edit PDF, it is kept in your browser’s local storage so you can reuse it. It stays on that device until you clear your browser data.
Using the tools
Is there a limit on file size?
Yes, and it comes from your device’s memory. On a computer the limits are 100 MB per file, 50 files at a time and 500 MB in total. On a phone they are 50 MB per file, 25 files and 200 MB in total. Very large files can be slow because your device does the work.
A tool is slow or freezes on a big file. What can I do?
Close other tabs to free memory, add fewer files at once, and try a computer instead of a phone for large PDFs and images. Tools that read every page, such as OCR or PDF to JPG, take longest.
Which browsers work?
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, with JavaScript turned on. If a tool misbehaves, updating your browser is the first thing to try.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The tools are laid out for phone screens as well as desktops. Heavy jobs, like OCR on a long scan or merging many large PDFs, are slower on a phone than on a computer.
Can I use it offline?
The page needs a connection to load. After that most of the work happens on your device, but we don’t promise offline use, and a few features, like live exchange rates and the OCR engine download, need the internet.
Why won’t a tool accept my file?
Image tools take JPG, PNG and WebP, and some also take GIF or SVG. PDF tools take PDFs, and the Office converters take their own formats. If a file is refused, the pop-up lists what that tool accepts. Files that are empty or damaged are refused too.
My download didn’t start or the file is empty.
Check that your browser isn’t blocking downloads or pop-ups for the site, that your device has free storage, and try the download button on the result card again. If it keeps happening, send us a report with the tool name and your browser.
PDF tools
Can Edit PDF change the text in any language?
Latin-script text, which covers English and similar languages, is edited as real, selectable text. For scripts the PDF’s own font can’t encode, like Devanagari, Chinese or Arabic, the edit is drawn as an image instead. It looks right, but that text is no longer selectable in that spot. A scanned PDF has no text to edit until you run it through PDF OCR.
Compress PDF barely changed my file. Why?
The tool shrinks the pictures inside a PDF. Text and vector graphics are not re-encoded, so a mostly-text document has little to give. Scanned documents, which are really pictures of pages, shrink the most. See how to compress a PDF without wrecking it.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
Yes. You are asked for that file’s password before it is added. The trade-off is that this file is flattened into images during the merge, so its text is no longer selectable in the combined PDF.
I forgot my PDF password. Can you remove it?
No. Unlock PDF removes protection you already have the password for. It isn’t a password cracker. It can also lift printing and copying restrictions on a PDF that opens freely.
Is Sign PDF a legally binding e-signature?
It places an image of your signature on the page, which is fine for informal paperwork. It is not the same as a certified e-signature service that binds a verified identity to the document and keeps an audit trail. For contracts that need to stand up legally, use one of those.
Do the Word, Excel and PowerPoint converters keep my formatting?
No, and the pages say so. They pull the text (or cell data) out and lay it out simply. Charts, images, slide designs and precise layouts are not recreated. For an exact copy, use the Save as PDF option in the original program.
Image tools
Does compressing an image reduce its quality?
JPEG and WebP are lossy, so yes, a little, and you choose how much. Compressing the same file again and again makes it steadily worse, so always compress from the original rather than from an already-compressed copy.
Should I use JPG, PNG or WebP?
Photos usually work best as JPG or WebP, and screenshots, logos and anything with transparency as PNG or WebP. The guide JPG, PNG or WebP goes through it with examples.
Does removing metadata change how my photo looks?
No. The image data is copied byte for byte, so nothing is re-compressed or resized. Only the hidden blocks, such as camera details and GPS location, are cut out. The colour profile and the rotation flag are kept so colours and orientation stay correct.
Will the passport photo meet my country’s rules?
It gives you the physical size you choose. It can’t judge your expression, lighting or head position, and requirements differ between offices and change over time, so check the rules of the office or website you are applying to before you print or submit.
Calculators
How accurate are the calculators?
They follow the standard formulas, for example reducing-balance EMI for loans. A real lender’s fees, rounding and taxes can make the final figure differ slightly, so treat the result as a careful estimate rather than a quote.
Are the health calculators medical advice?
No. They give general information from standard formulas and are not a diagnosis. BMI, for instance, ignores muscle mass. Talk to a doctor or a qualified professional about decisions that affect your health.
Are the exchange rates live?
No. The currency converter shows indicative reference rates, not a live feed. Banks and transfer services add their own margin on top, so what you are actually offered is normally a little worse. For real money, check a live source.
The site
Is it really free? How does the site pay for itself?
It is free, there is no account and no paid tier. The site is paid for by advertising and by optional donations through the “Support us” link in the footer. Ads don’t change how files are handled: your files still stay on your device and are never passed to advertisers. See the privacy policy for what ad networks can collect.
How do I report a bug or ask for a new tool?
Bugs: use the bug report form. Tool ideas and anything else: see the contact page.
Is the site available in other languages?
The interface is in English for now. Many tools work fine with text in other scripts. Text to PDF, for example, handles Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Thai.
